Oil of the Week: Geranium

It’s Easter weekend and the time to celebrate the miracle of life has arrived! There is nothing better than watching Spring unfold; decorating the earth with beautiful flowers and green grass. One of the most amazing things about flowers is their unique aromas. While some subtle and others strong, each one is different, and completely beautiful. While we could go and on about dozens of flowers here, the star of the show this week is Geranium

As a member of the Pelargonium species, Geranium is one of over 200 different perennials, succulents, and shrubs. These delicate blossoms are grown for their beauty and have been a staple in the perfume industry for years and years. The best way to describe the scent of this beautiful oil is a herbaceous odor with dry hints of floral and greenery. Although, perhaps, this may be one of the lesser known oils, it is quite important! The use of Geranium for beautifying purposes actually dates clear back to ancient Egyptian times where it was frequently used to beautify the skin, along with other medicinal benefits such as soothing wounds.  The edible leaves and flowers are even used today in all kinds of culinary recipes like desserts and teas.

Emotionally, Geranium essential oil promotes feelings of calm and helps to lessen any feelings of stress. Just like lots of other fantastic essential oils, Geranium is extracted through the process of steam distillation, where steam is passed through the plant material gently  in order to extract the aroma compounds. This is a gentle and effective method of removing the oils from such delicate plants.

Not only is this oil wonderful for mental health, it is so fantastic for encouraging our natural beauty to shine. Without a doubt, you won’t be able to wipe the smile off your face as Spring arrives with the smell of Geraniums and sunshine!
